Central was engaged in 2018 to begin an extensive restoration and renovation of the Tribune Tower complex. Key facets of the project include the unique renovation of the Tower’s eight, 8-story high stone flying buttresses as well as reconfiguration of the masonry openings throughout the lower three floors of the complex’s five buildings. Cathodic Protection has been installed to help preserve the structural steel supporting the buttresses. Sections of carbon-stained limestone have been cleaned. Special care is being taken to salvage as much original stone as possible for re-use throughout the buildings. With a scheduled completion in 2021, the iconic, neo-Gothic skyscraper is set to house high end condominiums while the smaller, surrounding buildings will enhance Michigan Avenue’s retail space.
